Gospel, arts fest

The 6th annual Gospel and Arts Fest at Johnston Community College will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium. The festival will feature classic and modern gospel choirs and dance groups, as well as a reception. For more details, call 209-2219 or e-mail dsdixon@johnstoncc.edu.

Art in Clayton

The Clayton Parks and Recreation Department has scheduled several upcoming classes.

Beginning Feb. 22 (classes are six weeks long):

Adult Basic Drawing -- 10 a.m. till noon Tuesdays. Cost: $65 for residents, $75 for non-residents.

Adult Pencil Drawing -- 1 till 2:30 p.m. Tuesdays. Cost: $55 for residents,$65 for non-residents.

Watercolors -- 7 till 9 p.m. Mondays. Cost: $65 for residents, $75 for non-residents.

Acrylics -- 7 till 9 p.m. Tuesdays. Cost: $65 for residents, $75 for non-residents.

Beginning March 2:

Calligraphy -- 5:15 till 6:45 p.m. Tuesdays. Cost: $35 for residents, $45 for non-residents.

After School Art -- 4:30 till 6 p.m. Wednesdays. Cost: $55 for residents, $65 for non-residents.

The Clayton Senior Center is located at 303 Dairy Road. The Clayton Center is located at 111 E. 2nd St.

'Blues Bash V'

"Blues Bash V: Eric Bibb and Ruthie Foster," will be held at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, at The Clayton Center, 111 E. Second St., Clayton. The performers blend soul, blues, gospel and R&B. The cost is $25. For more details or to buy tickets, call 553-1737 or go to theclaytoncenter.com.

'Pippin' in Clayton

Clayton Youth Theater will present "Pippin" at The Clayton Center at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, and 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, at The Clayton Center, 111 E. Second St., Clayton. Tickets cost $11 for adults and $6 for students 18 and under. For more details, call 919-553-1737.

Jazz guitarist at JCC

Variety show

The Town of Garner will present Gift 4, the town's fourth-annual talent showcase, Feb. 13.

Gift 4 will feature more than 20 acts, including Michelle Forbes Howell, Phillip McFadden and his gospel group Constellations of Apex, Garner Senior Center's G-Squad, Clayton's American Idol Scotty McCreery, Towne Players of Garner, Center Stage, Christy's DancExplosion, DanZe Zone, All About Ballroom, Miss Garner Brianna Tracy, Miss Garner Outstanding Teen Rachel Chavez, Miss Eastern Carolina Outstanding Teen Arlie Honeycutt, shadow puppets by Garner Magnet High School Art Students and more.

Bluegrass at JCC

Bluegrass artists Dailey & Vincent will perform at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, in the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium at Johnston Community College, 245 College Road, Smithfield. Jamie Dailey is a former member of Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver. Darrin Vincent played with Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder. Tickets are $22.50 in advance and $25 at the door. Open house in Clayton

An open house is scheduled from 10 a.m. till 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, at Eye of the Eagle Art Center, 131 E. 1st St., Clayton. A number of artists will demonstrate their work. Admission is free.

Christian film

"The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry," a Christian film, will open Feb. 19 at The Garner Town Square 10 Cinemas, 2600 Timber Drive, Garner. In the film, a 75-year-old man helps three 12-year-old boys deal with a bully.

Music festival

More than 65 piano and voice students will perform at the upcoming N.C. Federation of Music Clubs Festival at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19. The event will be held at Johnston Community College's recital hall, located in the Graphic Arts building, Room B108.

The festival is sponsored by Clayton Music Club and Johnston Community College.

Scholarship winners will perform at UNC-Greensboro for the state level scholarship on April 17.

All music students in Johnston County may participate in the festival if their teachers are a member of NCFMC. For more details, call Clayton Music Club President Betsy Bullard at 919-359-2582.

Black History Month

To celebrate Black History Month, the Town of Garner's parks and recreation department has joined the nonprofit group God's International Mission for an evening of entertainment. The night will include the mission's performance dancers, drums, costumes, songs and stories. The performance will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at Garner Historic Auditorium, 742 W. Garner Road. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and $5 for children. Proceeds will benefit God's International Mission's work to feed, clothe, house, educate and provide medical treatment to orphaned and abandoned African children.
