Lt. gets award for traffic safety

Bob Stevens, a lieutenant with the Garner Police Department, was recently honored for his work in helping create the Wake County Traffic Safety Task Force.

Stevens was awarded the Governor's Highway Safety Program Director's Award, along with Sgt. Brian Whitehurst of the Morrisville Police Department.

With Whitehurst, Stevens started the task force, which served more than 2,000 charges at several traffic checkpoints during 2009.

The charges include:

178 DWI charges

72 drug charges

684 unlicensed or revoked driver charges

This is the second year Stevens has received the award.

Cadet training

Cadet 2nd Lt. Gregory Morris of the Johnston County Civil Air Patrol took part recently in training in Winston-Salem.

He is the son of David and Jennifer Morris of Clayton.

Morris served as the training's administrative officer.

His duties included collecting fees, processing paperwork, creating and printing certificates for cadets participating in the program and assisting the cadet commander as needed.

Morris attends the Johnston County Early College Academy, where he is a sophomore.

He serves as flight commander for the Johnston County Cadet Squadron.
