Hoggard nips West Johnston boys

West Johnston's boys led the overwhelming majority of the night, but Wilmington Hoggard came on just in time to get a 64-62 first-round boys basketball playoff victory on Feb. 22. West led by five after the first quarter, by three at the half, and the two teams were tied entering the final quarter. Senior Mark Parker and junior Ben Jacobs had 17 points each for West.

New Hanover eliminates Southeast boys

Wilmington New Hanover picked up its first of two wins against Greater Neuse River 4-A Conference teams in the first round of the playoffs, eliminating Southeast Raleigh 60-50 on Feb. 22. The Wildcats outscored the Bulldogs 18-10 in the fourth quarter. David Washington and Joshua Newkirk shared high-scorer honors in the loss for Southeast with 11 each.
