AVID Bingo

The McGee's Crossroads Middle School AVID students will host a Bingo fundraiser from 6:30 till 8:30 p.m. Friday, March 5, in the school's cafeteria. The AVID program -- which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination -- helps students reach their college goals. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased in advance at the school office or at the door. Advance ticket purchasers will receive six playing cards; tickets purchased at the door will include four cards. Additional cards may be purchased for $1 each. The school is located at 13353 N.C. 210, McGee's Crossroads.

College graduate

Brandon Michael Touchon of Garner graduated in December from Appalachian State University. He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration.

Appalachian honors

A number of local residents earned academic honors during the fall semester at Appalachian State University.

The following were named to the Chancellor's List with grade-point averages of 3.85 or better: Corey Ann Crisafulli, Lauren Annelise Prigge and Storm Brenna Stuart, all of Clayton; and Courtney Bell, Jessica Leigh Dinwiddie, Sara Elizabeth Nickalson and Katherine Ruth Watts, all of Garner.

The following were named to the Dean's List with averages of 3.25 or better: Haley Thompson Abene, Jared Michael Butler, Brittni Elizabeth Delmaine, Lindsey Ann Elsey, Cameron Hunter Guthrie, Brittany Fritz Harbinson, Ryan Kirk Hemingway, Seth Prevost Jones, Rebekah Leanne Price, Timothy John Russell and Sandy Standley, all of Clayton; and Rebecca Ann Booth, Mckenzie Allen Johnson, Mary Beth McDowell, Lynsey-Paige McManus, Melissa Ann Sinclair, Jessica Marie Smith, Karen Anne Stevens, Abigail Simone Sutton, Jessie Marie Thorne and Tyler Scott Michael Wallace, all of Garner.

Spelling bee winners

The winners of the Johnston County Spelling Bee held Feb. 9 are listed below.

First place -- Shayne Jacobs, eighth-grader at Clayton Middle School.

Second place -- Hugh Jensen, eighth-grader at Cleveland Middle School.

Third place -- Carrisa Womble, seventh-grader at Meadow School; and Maya Stallworth, an eighth-grader at Smithfield Middle School.

Finalists were Emily Parker, an eighth-grader, and Isabella Enxuto, eighth-grader at McGee's Crossroads Middle School.

Class on talking

Wake Technical Community College will host a class on making money with your voice from 6:30 till 9 p.m. today (Wednesday, Feb. 24) at the Western Wake Campus. For more details or to register, go to plusfifty.waketech.edu or call 919-866-5800. The course number is 50865 and the cost is $35.

Hall of fame inductee

Clayton native Harvey Heartley Sr. will be inducted into the 2010 class of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association's John B. McLendon Jr. Hall of Fame. Heartley played basketball at North Carolina Central University from 1951-55. During that time, he was co-captain of the team in 1953 and '54. The induction ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 26, at the Charlotte Convention Center.

Driver's education

A driver's education meeting for students and parents is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 4, in the cafeteria at Smithfield-Selma High School, 700 E. Booker Dairy Road, Smithfield. To attend, students must be at least 14-1/2 years old. For more information, call Charles Woodard at 252-236-8669.

Car show at West

A car show is scheduled from 2 till 5 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at West Johnston High School, 5935 Raleigh Road near McGee's Crossroads. The entry fee is $20 per vehicle, with prizes going to Best 59 & Down (stock), Best 59 & Down (modified), Best 60 & Up (stock), Best 60 & Up (modified), Best Truck, Best Motor, Best Drag Car, Best Interior, Best Motorcycle, Best Paint and Best in Show. Set-up and registration will be from noon till 2 p.m. Judging will begin at 5. A chili cook-off will follow at 5:30. Bingo and cakewalks will run from 7 till 10 p.m. Proceeds will go to the West Johnston High School band.

Science Fair winner

MacKenzie Westmoreland, a fourth-grader, won this year's science fair at Cooper Elementary School in Clayton. Her project, "Green on the Roof, Green in the Bank," went on to place at the regional level, the first project from Cooper ever to do so.

Open house

An open house is scheduled from 2 till 5 p.m. Sunday, March 7, at Lighthouse Christian Academy, 2850 Old Fairground Road near McGee's Crossroads. Lighthouse is a private Christian school.

West Johnston

Kendra Lisec has been chosen to sing the national anthem at this year's National Leadership and Skills Conference, which will be held June 21-26 in Kansas City, Mo.

Lisec is a student at West Johnston High School, where she has been a SkillsUSA member for two years. She is vice president of North Carolina SkillsUSA.

Hundreds of students applied to sing the National Anthem at this year's conference.
