food drive
The Clayton Farm and Community Market is asking local residents to participate in a food drive at the market on Saturday, July 31. People are urged to bring nonperishable food items and/or surplus produce from home gardens to the market between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. The donations will go to the food pantry at New Trinity Missionary Baptist Church. Red hat society
The Red Hat Society, a meeting for women ages 40 and older, is scheduled to meet at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2, at Rainbow Lanes Family Fun Center, 850 N.C. 42 W., Clayton. Corn hole tournament
A mid-summer corn hole tournament is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, July 31, at Characters Quarters, 1506 U.S. 70, Garner.

'Idol' contest seeks singers
The Clayton Area Chamber of Commerce is seeking singers for the 2010 "Clayton Idol" contest. Auditions are scheduled from 6 till 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, at the chamber office, 301 E. Main St., Clayton. The finals will take place Saturday, Sept. 18, during the Clayton Harvest Festival. Black, White and Bling Gala
The Black, White and Bling Gala 2010, hosted by the Garner Mid-Day Rotary Foundation, is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, at the Grand Marquise Ballroom, 225 New Fidelity Court, Garner. The event is a fundraiser for the Backpack Buddies program and will feature dining and dancing. Title sponsors are Swift's Fine Jewelry of Knightdale and Grand Marquise Ballroom of Garner.
Attendees have a chance to win $2,500 and a 1.18-carat diamond donated by Swift's Fine Jewelry.
Additional gala proceeds will go to the Garner Mid-Day Rotary Club's scholarship programs for Garner Magnet High School students.
"The goal of the gala is to raise awareness of the needs of local children, and raise funds to help meet those needs," said Julie Clark, gala chair.

Working with electricity
An event titled "Electrifying Fun" is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, at the Johnston County Cooperative Extension, 2736 N.C. 210, Smithfield. Participants will learn about the different electrical components that make up the project circuit, how to read and follow an electric schematic and how to safely use soldering equipment. Hometown Heroes
The third annual Hometown Heroes Festival is scheduled from noon till 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, in The Village at Cleveland Springs in the Cleveland community. The festival will feature a family fun run, a chili and wing challenge, a corn hole tournament, hot dogs, hamburgers, live entertainment and activities for children.

Flapjack fundraiser
A pancake breakfast is scheduled from 7:30 till 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, at Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar, 1260 N. Bright Leaf Blvd., Smithfield. The cost is $7 per person, with proceeds going to Special Olympics of Johnston County.
