Banks earnings up
First Citizens BancShares, one of the Triangle's largest community banks, continues to reap the rewards from its strategy of acquiring failing banks with the government's backing.
The Raleigh-based corporate parent of First Citizens Bank announced last week that second-quarter net income soared to $28.6 million, compared to $6.2 million during the same three-month period last year.
The company attributed the growth to an increase in loans and investment securities.
First Citizens has acquired a number of smaller banks that had been taken over by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.
