Wake Tech earns high marks as a workplace

For the second straight year, Wake Technical Community College has been named one of the best colleges in the nation to work for by The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Wake Tech was one of only 20 two-year colleges across the country to earn the distinction, and was honored in five categories: collaborative governance, job satisfaction and support, confidence in senior leadership, supervisor or department chair relationship and respect and appreciation. In addition, Wake Tech was named to the 2010 Great Colleges Honor Roll for receiving the most recognition for its size.

Distinction as a "great college" is based on an institutional audit of college policies, practices, and infrastructure, and relies on the input of employees.

"Faculty and staff are the heart of Wake Tech," said Dr. Stephen Scott, president of the college, "and we want them to know they're valued. We try to provide a supportive work environment that recognizes excellence and offers challenges and opportunities for each employee to grow and advance."

The Chronicle surveyed more than 42,000 employees at 277 colleges and universities across the nation. Wake Tech earned the distinction among two-year colleges with 10,000 or more students. The "Great Colleges to Work For" program was created to recognize outstanding institutions and to learn more about what sets them apart.

The Chronicle works with ModernThink LLC, a consulting firm that assesses "human capital," to conduct the surveys, audits and analyses.
