Bulldogs down Cherokee in overtime
Wake Christian grabbed its first win of the season in memorable fashion Friday night, topping visiting Cherokee 26-20 in overtime. Chris Pittman scored on a 5-yard run on the Bulldogs' first possession of overtime after the Wake Christian defense held the Braves on fourth down.
It was Pittman's second touchdown run of the night; he finished with 55 yards rushing on the night.
But Wake Christian did damage through the air as well with D.J. Carper totaling 100 yards receiving on six catches and Tyler Renfroe throwing for 130 yards. The Bulldogs also scored on special teams with Dee Bryant returning a blocked Cherokee punt 46 yards for a touchdown. Bryant also scored on a 4-yard run as well.
Clayton evens
record in tennis
Clayton's girls tennis team moved to 2-2 on the season with back-to-back victories over Southeast Raleigh and South Johnston last week. The Comets beat Southeast 9-0 and took an 8-1 decision over South Johnston.
The Comets swept singles play against both opponents with Kristen Edwards, Joy Guha, Sheena Murray, Logan Boykin, Elezcia Singletary and Laura Bizzell claiming the singles victories. Edwards and Boykin and Singletary and Bizzell also won both of their doubles matches against Southeast and South Johnston.
Fuquay-Varina defeated the Comets 5-1 on Aug. 23.
Baseball player earns camp scholarship
Christian Gurgainus, a 13-year-old Little Leaguer from Wendell, has been named the recipient of the Robert H. Stirrat Baseball Camp Scholarship. As the recipient of the scholarship, Gurgainus earns round trip transportation and free tuition to the South Williamsport Little League Summer Baseball Camp.
The scholarship competition is open to all boys and girls of baseball camp age, 10-14. Each child submits an essay of 100 words or less on the benefits of playing Little League baseball or softball. Annually, more than 8,000 children apply for the Stirrat Scholarship, which has been awarded since 2006.
Gurgainus, a Clayton Middle School student, plays in the Clayton Little League in and is a member of the Clayton Angels team.
Little League Baseball annually holds summer camps in three locations - South Williamsport (Pa.), Bristol, Conn. and Hillsgrove, Pa.
South Williamsport is the only location that offers a day camp, in addition to five consecutive weeks of six-day, overnight camps. Campers train, play and are housed in the same facilities used by the 16 Little League teams who play in the Little League Baseball World Series each August.
