Town gains Main Street status
The Town of Clayton and the Clayton Downtown Development Association have been accredited as a 2010 National Main Street Program.
North Carolina Main Street evaluated the group's performance last year and found it met the 10 performance standards and criteria required to be named an accredited National Main Street Program and for meeting the commercial district revitalization standards set by the National Main Street Center.
College changes
Johnston Community College last week announced organizational changes that it said would position the college for the future and optimize human resources.
The curriculum division now has three deans overseeing the college's academic and college-transfer programs. Dawn Dixon is dean of the Department of Arts, Sciences and Academic Enrichment.
Linda Smith has been named dean of the Health Sciences and Early Childhood Department, and Mike Starling is dean of the Business, Public Service and Technology Department.
The Arts, Sciences and Academic Enrichment Department now includes four directors overseeing programs and services. The Health Sciences and Early Childhood Department has three program directors, and the Business, Public Service and Technology Department includes nine program directors.
Also, the library, distance education, global education and high school programs staff now report to the vice president of curriculum instruction.
Meanwhile, the Information Technology Department is now a part of the Institutional Effectiveness Division, which also includes research and planning, grants and marketing.
Finally, the Continuing Education Division is now called Community Development and Lifelong Learning, which more precisely reflects the programs and services the division provides. Within Community Development and Lifelong Learning, the Business and Industry Department has become the Economic and Workforce Development Department, and the Health and Emergency Services Department is now the Public Health and Safety Department.
Meeting notices, cancellations
The Steering Committee of the Johnston County Comprehensive Transportation Plan will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, in the conference room at the Land Use Center, 309 E. Market St., Smithfield.

The Johnston Community College Board of Trustees will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, in the Wilson Building conference room on the Smithfield campus, 245 College Road.
The Clayton Board of Adjustment meeting scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 15, has been cancelled. The next regularly scheduled meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, in the council chambers, The Clayton Center, 111 E. 2nd St. An agenda will be available the Friday before the meeting.
County reports sewage spill
Johnston County officials on Aug. 24 reported a sewage spill in Jordan Ridge Subdivision off of Josephine Road in the Cleveland community.
About 5,400 gallons of raw sewage spilled into an unnamed tributary of Swift Creek, the county said.
That day's heavy rainfall caused the spill, the county reported.

Library buys computers
The Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield has used a $10,920 grant to buy public-access computers. The federal Library Services and Technology Act grant came from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
The library bought 14 Dell computers with 19-inch widescreen LCD monitors, replacing 12 aging computers that had served thousands of patrons over the years.
