Southeast sweeps West Johnston
Southeast Raleigh's boys basketball team ended West Johnston's hopes for a winning streak with two solid quarters of defensive play Tuesday night. The Bulldogs held West to eight points each in the second and third quarters.
The Wildcats had led 13-6 after the first period of play.
William Walker and David Washington had 12 points each for the Bulldogs. Montrel Brooks had 11 for West Johnston.
Southeast prevailed in the girls game, 64-27. The Bulldogs led just 20-13 after a quarter of play, but held the Wildcats to 14 points over the final 24 minutes of play.
Rams take down Eastern Wayne
Cleveland claimed a pair of low-scoring basketball wins over Eastern Wayne on Tuesday night. The Rams' girls won, 39-29. Courtney Ireland led the way with 12 points, while Monique Torres added nine.
Cleveland's boys topped Eastern Wayne, 45-42.
Local conservation association sets banquet
The Johnston County chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association will hold its annual banquet at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2, at the Johnston County Agricultural Center (2736 Highway 210, Smithfield). The night includes both live and silent auctions that includes fishing equipment, marine artwork (including Mark Ray who will attend), beverages, dinner, raffles and drawings. Tickets are $55 per person, $85 for couples or $250 for a banquet sponsor. The CCA works to protect North Carolina's marine resources.
