Garner officer to receive award

Garner police officer Brian Lawrence will receive an award when MADD holds its annual banquet Feb. 24 in Raleigh.

Lawrence will receive the Eastern Underage Prevention Hero award, which goes to officers who go above and beyond their job requirements to prevent underage drinking in their communities.

Lawrence works year-round on driving-awareness programs, including seatbelt use, underage drinking and texting while driving. He has been a Garner police officer for eight years.

Air Force trains Nathan Bowman

Air Force Airman 1st Class Nathan S. Bowman has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. He is the son of Kevin and Susan Bowman of Raleigh.

The eight-week program included training in military discipline and studies, the Air Force's core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Bowman is a 2011 graduate of Garner High School.

Navy promotes James Jenkins

Navy Seaman Apprentice James D. Jenkins was recently promoted to his current rank upon graduation from recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 2011 graduate of Garner High School.

Jenkins received the early promotion for outstanding performance during all phases of training, which included instruction in naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety.

Navy trains Holly Shepherd

Navy Seaman Apprentice Holly M. Shepherd has completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. She is a 2008 graduate of Garner High School.

The eight-week program included instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety.

Navy promotes Parker Stanley

Navy Seaman Apprentice Parker E. Stanley was recently promoted to his current rank upon graduation from recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 2011 graduate of Garner High School.

Stanley received the early promotion for outstanding performance during all phases of the training, which included instruction in naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety.

Navy Seaman Apprentice Roland S. Barnes was promoted to his current rank upon graduation from recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 2011 graduate of West Johnston High School.

Barnes received the early promotion for outstanding performance during all phases of training, which included instruction in naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety.
