About 2 million Chicagoans came out to congratulate the Blackhawks after they won the Stanley Cup on the day of their parade. During its victory lap, Garner’s leaders happily settled for recognition from county and state government after winning what Mayor Ronnie Williams has called their Super Bowl.
Wake County Commissioners and state lawmakers formally congratulated representatives from Garner’s All America City delegation last week on consecutive days.
Further recognition had been planned the day after until rain moved the July 3 celebration two days back to Friday.
Tuesday, members of the delegation met with state Sen. Chad Barefoot for about 45 minutes before they were recognized on the Senate floor.
Williams said the exposure and positive marketing and branding would be beneficial for the town.
“We appreciate them taking the time to recognize us,” Williams said. “It’s good to be able to do stuff like this, it reflects well on the town.”
On Friday night, the town scheduled further recognition for the delegation at 7:35 p.m. in front of the crowd at Lake Benson Park, right after the performance of the North Carolina Symphony’s Brass Quintet.
