Monika Johnson-Hostler is the first candidate to announce she will seek the District 2 seat on the Wake County school board.

Johnson-Hostler said she’s running “to ensure parents have a voice, teachers receive more support, and all students have access to a quality education.” As the mother of a rising Wake third-grade student and the wife of Wake County high school math teacher, Johnson-Hostler says she “can be the voice for students, parents and teachers in District 2.”

Of the 18 schools in the district, 10 are located in Garner and another is near the town limit. Fuquay-Varina and part of Knightdale are also included in the county’s most southeast district.

Johnson-Hostler described herself as a veteran of the anti-sexual assault movement and has been quoted in media outlets on the topic. She serves as the executive director of the North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault, and a member of the N.C. Domestic Violence Commission. In a press release, she also says she’s involved with the National Alliance to End Sexual Violence.

The Thomasville native who’s lived in Raleigh for 14 years is a registered Democrat. District 2 is currently represented by board member John Tedesco of Garner, a Republican. Tedesco has not announced whether he’ll seek reelection.

Behringer files

In other Garner election news, Town Council Member Kathy Behringer filed for re-election Friday. The Republican has served two terms in the council.

The race for two open seats will consist of at least her and challenger Jeanette Hagwood, a Republican.

The filing period for the 2013 election ends July 19.
