GARNER — Police shut down all four lanes of U.S. 70 in Garner early Friday morning after a single-car wreck left one man injured.
Garner police Lt. Chris Clayton said Daryl Cornelius Mathis, 35, of 7706 Oak Marsh Drive, Raleigh, was traveling east bound when he ran his 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe off the road and into the median, where it struck a tree.
Garner Fire and Rescue crews had to use their heavy rescue tools to get Mathis out of the vehicle.
Because rescue crews were spread out in both lanes of traffic, police shut the highway down from the time the wreck was reported about 1:18 a.m. until about 3 a.m.
“We were able to open the roadway well before dawn. There was minimal impact to traffic because of the time of the incident,” Clayton said.
Mathis, who was the only person in the vehicle, was transported to WakeMed where he was listed in serious, but stable, condition.
Police have charged Mathis with driving while intoxicated, possession of an open container of alcohol, driving left of center and failure to wear a seatbelt.
