State Superintendent of Public Instruction June Atkinson will be the keynote speaker at Stand Up for Students Johnston County, a public education forum to be held 7 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Johnston County Courthouse in Smithfield.
Former Rep. Bob Etheridge will moderate. Etheridge served in the N.C. General Assembly, the U.S. Congress, and as N.C. superintendent of public instruction.
The panel will include Ed Croom, superintendent of Johnston County Schools; David Johnson, president of Johnston Community College; Dwight Morris, executive director of Partnership for Children Johnston County; and Rich Nixon, president of the Johnston County Association of Educators. Each of the panelists will speak about the impact of recent legislation on his organization.
Karey Harwood of Public Schools First NC will offer tips on advocating for strong public schools.
