Book promotion

JCC alumnus Anthony C. Darden and his wife T. Louise Darden will promote their book, “Freedom From Addiction; Freedom From Sin,” from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 27, at the Learning Resource Center on the main campus of Johnston Community College in Smithfield.

BET stars at GPAC

BET stars Shang Forbes and Aaliyah Ford will be at the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium for a comedy performance at 7 p.m. Friday, March 28, at 269 College Road, Smithfield. Tickets are $8 and are available at 919-209-2099 or online at jccperformingarts.com. Tickets are $8. All Johnston Community College students, faculty, and staff will receive one free ticket. This PG-13 performance is sponsored by the JCC Student Government Association.

Barbecue plate sale

McCullers Ruritan Club will hold a barbecue plate sale from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, March 28, at 8116 Ten Ten Road, Raleigh. Eat-in or takeout. Tickets are $8.

Jazz and brunch

Serve the Need of Johnston County (STN) and the Johnston County Alumni Chapter of N.C. Central University will co-host a Jazz Brunch fundraiser from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 29, at the American Legion Post 71 at 1300 Old U.S. 70 West, Clayton. The event will feature the NCCU Jazz Ensemble performing. Tickets are $25 and can be obtained by calling 919-585-2934.

Pancake breakfast

The Cleveland Jetsetters of Cleveland High will host a Flapjack Fundraiser from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, March 29, at the Applebees at 5158 N.C. 42, Garner. The cost is $7 per person. Call 919-934-2455 or email JohnWood@Johnston.k.12.nc.us for tickets.

Free dental work

Kevin B. Koebley, D.D.D., P.A. in Smithfield is offering free dental work to a deserving citizen. The practice invites short essays naming someone who needs dental work, to be submitted by Tuesday, April 1. Essays should be mailed to Kevin B. Business expo

The Garner Chamber of Commerce will present its eighth annual Business and Consumer Expo from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at Garner United Methodist Church, 201 Methodist Drive. The expo will be a showcase providing local businesses with a full day dedicated to promoting their brands. Call 919-772-6440 for more information.

Free tax preparation

The AARP Tax Aide program will assist taxpayers in electronically filing their federal and N.C. state tax returns from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and noon to 4 p.m. Thursdays at the Avery Street Annex, 201 Avery St., Garner. No appointments are necessary. Taxpayers and spouses, if filing jointly, must have picture IDs and Social Security cards for themselves and all dependents. If married, both taxpayers must be present. For a refund to be credited to a checking account, they must have a blank check, not a deposit slip. Taxpayers will need records of all income and expenses.

Crawfish festival

The inaugural Crawfish Festival will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at Aversboro Restaurant and Sports Bar, 1411 Aversboro Road, Garner. Proceeds from the festival will go to charities such as the N.C. Food Bank, ARC of Wake County, Pediatric Cancer, Michael J. Fox Foundation and the Fallen Firefighters Foundation. High school reunion

Paintings on display

Square dancing lessons

Food pantry

A food pantry is open from 9 a.m. to noon on the second Saturday of each month at Christ Community United Methodist Church, 1082 Amelia Church Road, Clayton. The food is free to anyone presenting an ID card. For more information, call 919-934-0213.

Parenting workshops

Partnership for Children of Johnston County offers two programs for parents with young children.

•  Motheread is a 12-week self-paced program that combines the teaching of literacy skills with child development and family empowerment issues.

•  The Incredible Years parent program offers weekly group sessions for 14 to 16 weeks. Participants practice skills to promote children’s academic, social and emotional skills.
