Justin Burkey to run at UNC Charlotte

April 18, 2014

Justin Burkey signs with Charlotte with his parents (seated) Bill and Carol Burkey, (standing, from left) Garner athletics director Nelson Smith, track and field coaches Ben Bondurant and Gary George cross country coach John Davis and principal Drew Cook.

Parents: Bill and Carol Burkey

High School: Garner

Also Considered: UNC Wilmington

Why Charlotte? “I liked the fact that it was a growing college, both academics and athletics wise. And I liked that there were teammates there who will push me to be my best.”

Major: Business

Notable: Justin has been a multiple-time all-conference selection in track and field and cross country while at Garner. He finished second in the GRNC cross country championships as a senior. … Getting cut from the basketball team as a seventh grader at East Garner Middle School kick-started his running career. “I joined the track team and started running a lot,” he said. “I knew that it was what I’d be doing in athletics from then on,” he said. “That feeling of pushing myself to be better every race.” … His favorite event is the 3,200 meters. “I can’t describe the feeling I get running that race,” he said. “It’s just the feeling that I was made for that distance, everything about it.” … The growth of the Trojans’ cross country team is one of the things that Justin takes pride in about his time running in Garner blue and gold.
