Garner makes early lead stick, tops East Wake

— Garner jumped out to a three-run lead in the first inning and downed East Wake 5-2 on Thursday afternoon in Greater Neuse River 4A Conference softball.

Trojans’ lead off batter Brooke Kamphius, who reached in all four of her plate appearances, drew a walk to start the Garner first inning and later scored on a dropped third strike which allowed Bridgette Kirkland to reach. After the second East Wake error of the inning put Kira Jackson on, Libby Brynum singled through the right side of the infield to score two runs and put the Trojans on top 3-0.

Alisha Josie tripled to start the third inning for Garner, then scored on Lauren Marbrey’s RBI single to center field for a 4-0 lead.

The Trojans, who put runners on base in every inning but the second and seventh, pushed the lead to 5-0 on a Josie RBI single (scoring Kamphuis) in the top of the sixth.

The Warriors took advantage of a hit batsman and a walk with one out in the seventh before Jasmine McAbee’s RBI single cut the lead to 5-1. Breanna Boggs followed with a sacrifice fly to score Haley Glover with two outs.

East Wake’s final out came when Garner shortstop Kelsey Bryan ran down a pop fly in foul territory.

Marbrey, the Garner pitcher, limited the Warriors to three hits and issued a walk and had the hit batsman.

Annabeth Watkins took the tough luck loss for East Wake, despite giving up just one earned run. She struck out seven and walked four. The Warriors had five errors on the afternoon.

Josie went 2-for-3 for Garner and Marbrey was 2-for-4.
