Communications honors awarded

The town of Garner has won three Excellence in Communications awards from N.C. City & County Communicators, matching the total it won in the organization’s awards competition last year. The town won first place honors in the category of marketing tools – best use of promotional item for its All-America City video featuring Scotty McCreery; and in the category of communication technology – electronic external newsletter for the Garner Update e-newsletter. The town also won second place honors in the category of printed publications – brochure for its 2014 bond program informational brochure.

Business opening

Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt will open for business Saturday, May 3. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the new business will give out 8-ounce cups of frozen yogurt. Other activities will take place, including a ribbon-cutting, free giveaways and more.

Job fair

Johnston Community College will hold its annual job fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, in the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium lobby at JCC’s campus in Smithfield. A Human Resources panel will run from 11 a.m. to noon. Over 40 companies and organizations will be in attendance at the job fair.

Business courses at JCC

Johnston Community College will offer several business courses. All courses will be taught in the Workforce Development Center, 135 Best Wood Drive, Clayton. Visit johnstoncc.edu for more information.

•  Microsoft Word Specialist 2010 Certification Boot Camp will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, May 13-14, in room 1031. Cost is $149.

•  Microsoft Excel 2010 Certification Boot Camp will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, May 27-28, in room 1031. Cost is $149.

•  Getting Started with a New Online Business will be taught from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays May 19 to June 23 (no class May 26) in room 1032. Registration is $189 plus book cost.

•  Excel I will be taught from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 10., in room 1031. This is an introductory class to Microsoft Excel. Registration is $71.

•  Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 Certification Boot Camp will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, June 24-25, in room 1031. Cost is $149.

•  Is Your Retail Business Ready for E-tail? will be taught from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, June 30, in room 1032. Cost is $79 plus book cost.

•  Instant E-Commerce Options with Storefronts will be taught from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, July 14, in room 1031. Registration is $79.

•  Online Fundraising Options for Non-Profits will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, July 21, in room 1031. Registration is $79.

•  Microsoft Outlook 2010 Certification Boot Camp will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, July 22-23, in room 1031. Cost is $149.

•  Niche E-Commerce will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, August 4. Cost is $79.

•  Overhauling your Existing E-Commerce Site will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, August 11, in room 1031. Cost is $79.

•  Notary Public classes will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 15 and August 15 in the Workforce Development Center, and June 19 in the Benson Conference Center. Cost is $70 plus book.

CPA’s certified

Two Garner residents, Sarah Jackson Berkner and Brittany Nicole Powell, were recently certified as Certified Public Accountants by the N.C. Board of Certified Public Accountant Examiners. Applicants are required to pass the Uniform CPA Examination and satisfy the education, work experience and moral character requirements of the board.
