Man arrested in McCreery robbery

May 9, 2014

— A 19-year-old man turned himself in Tuesday night to face charges in a Monday home-invasion robbery in which one of the victims was American idol winner and N.C. State University student Scotty McCreery.

Police charged Mikkail Jamal Shaw of 2904 Nina Court in Raleigh with robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit that crime.

Three men reportedly robbed McCreery and others of cash and electronics at an apartment in a complex on Wolf Tech Lane about 1:45 a.m. Monday. All had guns, police were told.

Shaw surrendered to authorities at the Wake County Detention Center, police spokesman Jim Sughrue said. He was being held in lieu of $375,000 bail.

McCreery won the television talent search in 2011, kicking off his singing career nationally while he was still at Garner High School. He graduated in 2012 and is a sophomore at NCSU.

A man who was in a bedroom when the robbery happened told police that the three men were armed with two pistols and an assault rifle and told everyone to get down on the floor. From staff reports
