College Signing

Saylon Kieft to play baseball at Mount Olive

May 30, 2014

Saylon Kieft signs with the University of Mount Olive with his parents (seated) Shawn and Chris Kieft, (standing, from left) Garner athletic director Nelson Smith, baseball coach Derik Goffena, his brother, Spencer, and principal Drew Cook.

Parents: Shawn and Chris Kieft

High School: Garner

Height, Weight: 6-foot-1, 160 pounds

Also Considered: Barton, Mars Hill

Why Mount Olive? “The coaches were great from Day 1. My dad having played there for four years played a big part for me.”

Major: Business

Notable: Saylon pitched, played the infield and outfield for Garner. He was 3-3 with a 2.58 ERA as a senior on the mound. He throws a fastball, change-up and curveball. … At Mount Olive, he will fill a utility role, possibly pitching and playing anywhere on the field. … He wants to add size and strength before he takes on his career as a Trojan in green instead of blue. … “I’m just fortunate to have been a part of a team like this and that’s what I’ll always remember about playing here,” he said. “There was a chemistry here that I’ve never felt with other teams.”
