High school summer leagues begin play this week

cbest@newsobserver.comJune 13, 2014

The Johnston County Instructional League prep baseball season begins June 17 with seven schools participating. The league gives players the chance to play during the week both against other county teams in scrimmage games and a day each week for intra-squad practices and/or scrimmages with other schools.

Games are scheduled each Tuesday from June 17 until July 15, with no games during the Fourth of July week. The optional intra-squad or other scrimmages will be held on Thursdays during that period.

West Johnston will field two varsity teams in the league, while Smithfield-Selma and Princeton will field only varsity teams. Cleveland, South Johnston, Clayton and North Johnston are fielding varsity and junior varsity teams.

“This year the league is two fold,” said West Johnston coach and league director Joey Worley. “1. It allows us not to use too many pitchers and conserve the arms that are already tired and over worked. 2. It makes it a true instructional league. We as coaches are able to be a little more hands on and so more situations.”

Since most of the players in question also play on showcase or travel teams on summer weekends, the JCIL gives high school programs the chance to work with prospects for next spring’s teams without over use, Worley added.

Garner will play in the Central Carolina Scholastic Summer League and opens its season Monda, June 16, by hosting Cary at 6 p.m. The Trojans travel to Cary on Tuesday.

Corinth Holders will stick to intrasquad scrimmages this summer.
