N.C. Boater Education class

An N.C. Boater Education class for ages 12 and older, taught by N.C. Wildlife Enforcement Officers, covering boat operation, legal requirements and handling emergencies, will be held at the Avery Street Recreation Center July 21-22. Each class is from 6-9 p.m. The course certifies anyone age 14-16 to operate a personal watercraft in the state. Contact the N.C. Wildlife Commission ( or 919-707-0010) for fees and more details.

Junior tennis camps

A junior tennis camp for ages 11-17 for all levels will be held July 28-31 at the South Garner Tennis Courts. The camp will consist of stroke drills, conditioning, game and match play. Camp is from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. daily and the fee is $125-140. A camp for ages 6-10 will be held from 9-11 a.m. on July 28-31 as well. The cost is $90-115.

Adult open gym

Adult open gym organized pick up basketball games are played from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesdays at the Avery Street Recreation Center. Ages 18 and older can participate. The cost is $2-3. Registration is not required.

Preschool sports leagues

Preschool sports leagues for ages 4-5 are instruction-based and focus on teamwork and sportsmanship. All leagues will have five practices and three games on Saturday mornings at either 8:30 or 9:30 at the Avery Street Recreation Center. The cost is $35-46 per sport. Mini Heisman (football) is Sept. 13 until Oct. 25.

Tennis lessons

An assortment of junior tennis lessons for ages 8-17 will be held throughout the summer at the South Garner Tennis Courts. Most sessions run four weeks and feature hour-long instruction sessions. Fees range from $30-84 depending on the age group and level of play. Contact the Parks Dept. for specifics.

Adult beginner tennis lessons are set for Sept. 1-24 from 6-7 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. The costs is $70-92.

Preschool gymnastics

Motor skills, coordination, strength and flexibility are developed for ages 3-5 using obstacle courses and gymnastics equipment at Artistic Gymnastics. Classes are available from 9:15 until 10 a.m. and 7:15 until 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, Aug. 5-19.

Hunter safety course

A hunter safety course for ages 12 and older taught by N.C. Wildlife enforcement officers will be held Sept. 8-10 from 6-9 p.m. nightly at the Avery Street Recreation Center. All first-time N.C. hunting license buyers must complete a hunter education course before hunting in N.C. or purchasing a hunting license. Demonstration guns will be provided. (It is unlawful to bring privately-owned weapons into Town of Garner facilities.) Contact the N.C. Wildlife Commission ( or 919-707-0010) for fees and more details.

Preschool sports

Preschool sports classes for ages 4-5 focusing on the fundamentals of basketball, T-ball, soccer, floor hockey and flag football will be held throughout the summer. Each sport runs for three weeks with 45-minute sessions on Wednesdays from 6 until 6:45 p.m. The cost is $15-20 per sport. Visit the Garner Parks website for more specific information.

30-and-older basketball league

Individual players can join this recreational basketball league playing on weeknights (mainly Tuesday and Thursday) at the Avery Street Recreation Center. Players will be divided into teams on the night of the league meeting – Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. Register online by Sept. 9 at 3 p.m. The fee is $68-90.

Wednesday Night Adult Open Gym

Open gym basketball for ages 18 and older is offered 7-9 p.m. Wednesdays at the Avery Street Recreation Center. The cost is $2-3.

Volunteer Youth Coaches

Youth open gym at Avery Street Recreation Center

Youth open gym sessions for ages 6-17 will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Saturdays at the Avery Street Recreation Center from Aug. 16 until Sept. 27. There are games, activities and basketball available each week. There is no charge for the event. A special youth open gym session is planned for Sept. 1.

Preschool open gym

Preschool open gym for ages 2-5 at the Avery Street Recreation Center is designed for meeting friends and enjoying a morning of free play and some organized activities from 10-11 a.m. on Tuesdays. Sessions run April 1 until June 3 and Aug. 26 until Sept. 23. The cost is $2-3; pre-registration is not required.

Fitness Classes and Activities

The Garner Parks Department offers a variety of fitness training classes including Zumba, belly dancing, dancing, step classes and more. For info, visit or call the Parks Department.



Fall youth sports

Registration for fall sports with the Clayton Parks and Recreation Department is now open. Fall sports are co-ed soccer (ages 4-7), softball (ages 7-14) and girls volleyball (ages 9-14). The fee is $25-60 per player. Register at the Clayton Community Center.

Men’s fall softball league

Registration for a men’s adult (ages 18 and up as of June 1) softball league in Clayton is now open. Games will be played at Clayton Municipal Park or Clayton Community Park. A minimum of six teams are needed for the league. The fee is $550 per team with an additional $40 fee for each non-resident of the town of Clayton on the roster. Call the Parks Dept. for more info.

Adult coed 7-on-7 soccer

The Clayton Parks and Recreation Dept. will offer a seven-on-seven adult coed soccer league later this summer for ages 18 and up (as of June 1). Games will be played on weeknights at East Clayton Community Park starting in late August and running into October. Six teams are needed for the league and there is a maximum of 12 team slots available. The fee is $350 per team, plus an additional $40 for each non-resident of the Town of Clayton on the team roster.

Multi-sport camp

A Multi-sport camp featuring flag football, baseball/T-ball, basketball and soccer will be held Aug. 18-22 at the Clayton Community Center. Camp runs from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. daily. This Sports Camp is for beginners, intermediate and slightly advanced athletes. These five days of camp will teach and expose an aspiring athlete to fundamental knowledge of the area’s most popular sports. Also, the camp will teach cross training activities and personal fitness exercises to best prepare your athlete for their upcoming sports seasons. The early registration fee is $115 (three weeks before each camp) or $150 thereafter. Additional siblings can attend for $75 each. For info: 919-553-1550.

The Clayton Parks Dept. is always looking for volunteers. Opportunities include park beautification, special events and work in our community garden.
